kip could admit to himself that he missed his Radiancy (Fitzroy Angursell!!!!) and that there was still so much to do and the sun had set and what had he even done today? or the day before?
blurry days, he thought, a little unhappily. he rubbed his face in his hands.
he heard the noise of a guest and was about to dismiss them when he saw Pikabe in casual clothing. this was surprising enough that he briefly forgot to be annoyed.
“Pikabe? Is something wrong?”
“i wished to thank you, your excellency,” Pikabe said, and saluted.
“for what?”
it was long part of Pikabe’s work to not be professionally goggle-eyed, but Kip could see that this was a baffling question.
“Feonie and Ato were quite worried about the matter of the salt tax, your excellency. i attempted to put them at ease that you would never let the matter pass, but Feonie said she could not be comforted until she saw it.”
he had thoroughly castigated some merchants looking to put most of the benefits of the mgunai saltworkers into their own pockets, rather than the hands of the workers. those taxes had been properly dismissed. feonie’s family was from mgunai, and she was courting Ato, Pikabe’s partner. Ato did seem too taciturn to say anything, and perhaps Feonie found it improper, but Pikabe has decided it was worth it.
“i am glad to assist here i could ease her, and i am glad you knew i would,” kip said.
“perhaps sir might feel comforted by some rest?” franzel asked, tentatively, appearing in his doorway. “he has gone a great service to his household today.”
he could do another service to his household. “yes, franzel, prepare my bedchamber.”
“yes, your excellency,” franzel said, and hurried away.
Pikabe was grinning at franzel’s back. “You do so much for your Zunidh, your excellency, and your staff love you so. perhaps there is wisdom in appreciating those deeds?”
