okay so like. here’s the thing. i can’t remember EVER matt choosing to “punish” the table for going off on a weird sidequest. for ex, nothing happened catastrophically in the world when ..

– they went on an adventure inside the hfb for ???? time ??

– they never missed travelercon even though no one ever knew when it was. also just like …. there were no repurcussions from the whole “pretending to be a god” thing?!

– they didn’t catch (or fail to catch) lucien due to various escapades including going back to rexentrumm

– obviously just ignoring essek for multiple months made him sad and not mad

– the hag never came back for them

– dagon lived when fjord told him to attack lucien

– jester had no punishments for returning to nicodramas multiple times after she was banned

etc.

so i am interested to see if there is some obvious downside to them taking a detour to resurrect (or fail to resurrect) laudna. it does FEEL like there’s time pressure to stop the unseelie court, otahan, ludinus, etc, from doing whatever they’re doing before the apogee solstice. but maybe that time pressure is fake time pressure, like from a video game where there’s no downsides from you playing as many sidequests as you want, and you trigger the next story mission at the perfect time no matter when you go to the next mission trigger. and like, they’ve just SHOWN UP at whitestone and put vex and pike out several thousand gold of reagants. also ashton was a jerk to percy (which was great by the way), who is the lord of whitestone and significant political mover? and they had that residuum????

like matt’s npcs and the storyline often say “you owe me” or “you need to do this or else,” but he never or-elses them or says “hey you owe me that favor, do x or do y.”

vaguely tangentially i wish that they had gone to jiana hexum about laudna because she would have many fewer reservations about delilah and is probably much more likely to make them ACTUALLY make them run another errand for her.

this is the same commentary i had about matt as a DM here when i talked about dairon and essek.

i don’t think this dynamic matt does is neither good nor bad. i think it’s probably both one time or another! and i think it does free his players to do WHATEVER THEY WANT, which maybe is good, and maybe is bad! probably neither and both!

this has been a post. matt mercer is a dungeon master.
