When Yasha had struck Lucien down, Essek had let out a wail of triumph, forgetting where the blood was caked into his hair, the scratches the cleric had left down his front. He'd never been so tattered, aching, and in so much pain before.
The air had gone out of the room and there had been a noise. A noise he didn't understand at first. He heard Caleb's rasping breath and Jester's voice -- are you okay, Fjord? --
The sound was weeping. Great sobs. Essek's head hurt - he touched his ear and felt a crust of blood drying over an earring - trying to locate the source of the sound. The uneven ceiling and walls, missing chunks from Beauregard's stray fists and the occasionally awry magic crossbow bolt, made it hard to locate the sound.
After a moment he realized. It was Yasha, bloody wing limps around her, feathers scattered in ever direction. She was on her knees, clutching Lucien's still, bloody body to her. The acoustics of the cavern made the sounds bounce in a way Essek was sure he was never going to forget.
