lafayette took to calling him your excellency, which washington though was patently absurd. and yet he enjoyed it all the time. he had now established that washington was not a normal crow, and then perhaps him an awry, unhappy familiar, and then only after a great deal of thinking had wondered out loud if his excellency was some sort of very mysterious shape-shifter, which was close enough to the truth that he cawed, enough and until lafayette said ok, ok, so you are a shapeshifter, i see, i see.

although this was a terrifying thing to admit. what if lafayette liked him perfectly as a crow? what if lafayette preferred him as a crow. he would be much more - everything. he had been tall, he thought. he had been tall and ragged. he had scars, which had come with him. when he looked in the mirror he tried to remember what he had been like, before he had been knotted into this shape by enemy. a peculiar and vicious torture. to live out the rest of your life as a bird.

he had been disfigured, he was sure. and lafayette was handsome and cheery. he would dislike a disfigured sorcerer, older.

but he could hardly lie. he could hardly pretend to be a bird when lafayette knew him to be a person. and then lafayette had said are you trapped? you must be! would you turn into a person? can you? were you born a bird? we should find how to dispel your curse! and it had happened before washington had intended it.

lafayette still called him your excellency, and made great promises about getting him his body back. truthfully he did not dislike being a bird so much. certainly many of his troubles could not be managed in this body.

i am very excited, lafayette said, i bet you are equally as noble with fingers.

he did not think so, although he could no longer be sure.
