In the end he had accumulated four nests, owing to a particularly excessive number of twigs lafayette had brought him. It was also completely evident that for all of lafayette’s brilliance and exuberance, neither of which he lacked in any quantity - i would have been abysmal at taking care of an actual raven, who would have given him several good peckings if not abandoned him altogether. So it was exceptionally fortunate, then, that he was not a real raven, even if had not made much of an effort to express it to his seeming-landlord.

It was not uncommon for sorcerers to to be a little mad, so washington did not hold it against lafayette that he, either actually or for real, felt rather affection about a ragged black bird like himself. Lafayette flattered him despite his obvious unkemptness - had (correctly!) intuited that these had come from some kind of battle. He must have provided good company, though he could barely say how. Maybe lafayette would befriend any animals that would tolerate his smothering affections.

So it was lucky that owing to his humanity he had not yet eaten a ribbon or a bottlecap, and done quite well even with the crow’s stomach for the comedic little plates of food lafayette would set for him, and hardly minded being scratched in ways both comfortable and not, and was only startled a bit at lafayette’s usual crashes and bang that were a part of magic.

Lafayette’s response to his unbirdlike fortitude was to call him heroic, and very strong, and enduring. He must have gone through a lot, to be unswayed by watching lafayette turn spoons into feathers, and feathers into twigs, and then
