It's Alexander Hamilton's birthday today, so how does that get celebrated (privately or otherwise) in Greenhouses?
he Well, I imagine Alexander hasn’t had a lot of celebrated birthday. So there’s
1. He was growing up with his mom. So I imagine those were touching, but not exactly present-filled, birthdays.
2. Sad orphan. (zilch.)
3. College kid. (I imagine these were interesting.)
4. Military kid. (He probably didn’t tell anyone when his birthday was.)
5. Schuyler. (Probably some good presents from his sisters but he didn’t get a massive gala like his sisters did.)
6. Washington
First of all, I do get the best mental image of Washington secretly flipping out on how to celebrate someone’s birthday. Like… what should he do? Writes a letter to Martha. ‘Dear Martha, how do I tell Alexander how meaningful he is to me? Should I have a very large party? A very small party? Should I get him a very large gift? Many small gifts? Both? Neither? HALP. yr obdnt srvnt gen geo washington”
he frets about this a lot. he needs advice from all his friends. everyone thinks this is very funny.
anyway i imagine hamilton birthdays in mount vernon are lowkey but thoughtful. you know, alex’s favorite food and stuff, washington paying extra attention to him, lots of tender sex, buying him rare books he wanted and stuff. sometimes they have small but friendly group dinners with like eliza, john, etc. i do think eventually washington builds him some kind of his own space though, although i’m not sure what it is. a workshop? a third library? a big empty space for him to design how he likes? not sure.
