John would not have believed, up until recently, that General Washington himself would appear at his wedding. Yes, His Excellency was married to John’s closest friend. But still, to imagine the general himself - the general, the hero himself, their valiant leader and strategist - appearing at his wedding - it was - well, it was extraordinary. And still somehow Washington was here, radiant in an embroidered jacket, stern in the way John admired him. To point him out to Martha - to say to his wife (his wife!) that his Excellency General George Washington, recluse that he was - had attended his wedding — was a magnificent thing indeed. He hoped to never forget it.
(That his father grouched about it like an overstuffed frog was a pleasant side-benefit.)
The general did not even seem to be overwhelming him, as John thought might not happen. Instead he stood at Hamilton’s side, watching him out of the corner of his eye with what John had only realized afterward was the sort of affection a person usually only reserved for someone so close to them they could feel them within them. He imagined he looked at Martha like that, sometimes. To imagine General Washington looking like that at someone was – a thought it took him a few moments to process.
“John!” Alexander said, appearing in front of him, and Washington in his wake. “Everything is marvelous. You look beautiful, Lady Manning.”
”Hello, Alexander,” John said, and bowed his head. Martha smiled. “Hello, General Washington.”
”Hello, Colonel Laurens,” Washington said, “Thank you for inviting me to your wedding.”
“It is a greater honor for you to attend,” Martha said, and smiled. She looked between his friend and his friend’s husband (General Washington! Alexander’s husband! Sometimes even such a thing was hard to process). “You both look charming.”
“You are breathtaking as well, Lady Manning,” Hamilton said, “As for George, he looks best when I compliment him.”
(George, John thought, amazed.)
“The truth comes out at last,” the general said, and slid an arm around Alexander’s waist, holding him close, “And such why I prefer him by my side.”
