*hides behind fake mustache* Hello I am a stranger who would like to hear more about the fantastic force of nature that is greenhouses Martha
[reads name tag] hello my name is shmalapertqueen. wow you look just like someone i know….
i was actually thinking about this but then i took a nap, because wheni realized that washington courted her, that would be somewhat scandelous becuase even if george wasn’t in wasn’t in a class where arranged marriage was reasonable, martha certainly was. which is interesting and required additional thinks in my head.
so let’s think about this:
-obviously born a super rich family
-she was the oldest child in the actual dandridges, although she probably wouldn’t have been suggested to court a surveyor, so she was maybe the second or third kid? not sure what that looks like. there’s a thing.
- she was a badass person in general (obvs.) i bet there’s a possibility she was managing a lot of the estate for her family at some point? i wonder if she isn’t the oldest but she was the most capable?
- anyway she knows george through lawrence, our ambitious figure in this story. and i think in the scale of class-growing, one of the most eligible. in the scale of his class, he married up and was probably impressive and new. and then of course he was always telling geroge how to be the best person ever, so it seems sensible that he said “hmm… we need to get you married but the parents are dead. can get you go marry up too?” and of course martha was charmed by him. and they courted for a while. and this probably would have been like, either right before lawrence got sick or maybe like, when they didn’t think it was serious? like, whatever, lawrence is just a little sick. but i think they were pretty close to actually being maried when washington said “i have to take care of my brother and because of that i don’t think i’ll be able to provide you the attention and care you dserve.” because even when he was a lil george, he was still a self-sacrificing idiot. and i imagine martha was pretty fucking pissed, because because it was a little scandal they were courting at all, and you can do two things, you moron, and now you’re going to leave me with nothing. and he said “sorry.” because that’s the guy that he is.
so then that happens. and probably pretty quick after that was the first war, and they fell out of contact and martha married daniel custis which righted her standing. and they were happy i bet. actually i know. it was a good relationship, they had status, they were wealthy, they had kids, it was all a good thing. and george was super there for him when daniel died.
