Greenhouses prompt: Hamilton has an opportunity to show how protective he is of Washington, who thinks this is adorable and maybe kind of hot.

“Retirement tour” was a strange term, but it fit what they did nonetheless. There were other council members in place who were ready to follow his legacy and carry on with this intentions, and finally it seemed that he was no longer needed to hold the country’s reins. It had been a strange thing to think and to observe, and had taken no small amount of convincing from all sides, that he could put down his duty. But Hamilton had convinced him with the answers from many packets and laws, and Schuyler and Knox with their own retirements, and of course Hamilton’s friends in government, who worked with them just as much.

And so he went to the new territories - states, they thought of themselves - and the townspeople just one more time hailed him for the hero they liked him to be, and thought hamilton his enigmatic but energetic husband.

they were at a dinner with the local politicians and high-ranking community members. there was one who disliked him with evident relish, and had all evening making snide remarks about him, which he knew better than to react to. hamilton had made subtle remarks back, a little over what washington would have liked, but within reasonable limits.

“the future will merely be significantly brighter with new leadership,” the man said.

hamilton’s eyebrows went up; washington thought to rebuke him with a touch, but did not do so in time.

“brighter?” hamilton said, with the voice of the beginning of his rant, “what days have you been in? have you not see the growth of our fair land? does the general’s hand not touch everything that has improved?”

the man narrowed his eyes at hamilton. washington thought to stop him, but. he was retired. perhaps he could not.

“would you discuss your roads, which have been improved from the general’s taxes?” hamilton continued, standing from his chair, “or perhaps your fine shirt, which was made with the improved trade from our better relations with others, by his hand? or perhaps i see you have a small child - does he read, from the books the general has inspired scholars to write?”

“those have done so by themselves. you give their credit to him.”

“do i?” Hamilton stepped closer now, and with his fluid ease and complete disregard for politeness, sat on the man’s table and pushed his bowl side, “or do you ignore the strands of the world that show you your results? are you the sort of man who ends his line of thought at your leather comes from the tanner? do you never see the cow?”

A beat.

“I suppose one could leave such a simple, unthinking life like that,” hamilton continued, and smiled a far-off little smile, “Never considering past his own shopkeep.”

The man sat back and scowled. Washington did not smile, although he thought it. In the heat of his discussion his husband was always the most handsome and brilliant, he thought. perhaps they would have to hold such debates for fun, if only to see the sparkle of hamilton’s eyes.
