Fashion Anon here: first, thank you! Second, the discussion and developments are fantastic! Third, in the Regency period we don't have to deal with the issue of corsets and other torture devices fro women, but I wonder how it was just a couple decades before. My guess is, as corsets were only useful for those who can sit around during the day (supposedly), they followed the same pattern as skirts. On the other hand, there were eriod in IRL history when even men wore corsets. (TBC)
Men wore corsets historically to emphasize their waist and masculine figure, specifically during Regency era (as well as at other times). My guess would be, either corsets are worn by men and women who are supposed to lead the life of leisure, or they are worn by both men and women who want to emphasize their best features (waist/shoulder ratio in men, push up breasts in women), and at some point are widespread equally with pants and skirts.
hello original fashion anon! yes, as you see, we all got very excited about the political meanings and partisanization of clothes. thank you for putting us all here.
in all honesty, the reason they all wear waistcoats and dresses is that i think waistcoats are super cool and i wanted them to all to wear waistcoats. i know very little about actual clothing history so i am interested in learning and also making stuff up for my little universe.
also there’s no like actual SUPER torture devices. just a regular amount of comfort sacrificed for beauty.
i think hamilton would probably wear a corset like, after the story ends. he’s super vain after all.
