it was a terrible young man who he was married to, who he was at presently eating dinner with. you see, his husband was very duplicitous - a trickster of the highest order. first, he had tricked washington into consuming a noticeable quantity of bourbon. he had done this by asking questions about flavor profile, and how bourbon was made, and how it tasted, and the warmth of it in a man’s stomach, and soon washington realized that his glass had been refilled, perhaps more than once, and he was feeling quite well indeed.

second, his husband was eating strawberries.

ordinarily, this would not be such a terrible thing. washington liked strawberries. however, on this occasional his husband was consuming them in the most horrible way, and by that he meant with a slowness so intense that there might have been a curse involved. for each one involved this process:

first, hamilton would select a strawberry. he had a delicate way of picking out of the bowl: slim fingers selective, in long pursuit of the ideal strawberry. one was too firm, another too soft, one too red, another not red enough. when he would find one he would study it, and bring it to his nose to sniff, to make sure it was perfect. then, he would wrap his lips around it like an embrace, and there might be a flash of a pink tongue; there was the soft sound of the skin being pierced, and perhaps a spurt of red juice dripping down hamilton’s mouth. hamilton’s eyes would close as he absorbed the flavor - his long eyelashes dark against this pale skin. it was as if he was experiencing something so different, so great, so much more extensive than just a strawberry. it was a terrible, wonderful thing to watch. salacious, in a way. the sort of thing that a man could not describe without becoming uncomfortable under one’s collar.
