May. 10th, 2016 12:57 ami haven’t watched turn s03e03 yet, but literally at no point am i convinced that anna actually loves hewlett. likes, maybe. appreciates and values definitely. understands how this other human in her existence has done a lot for her, and helped her out of some really tricky snarls. and all those things are good. and important! but at no point have i really seen - or gotten a subtext vibe - that anna loves him. every time he tries to make an advance her, she’s stunned and and confused. i guess you can read “stunned as confused” as “lovestruck-baffled” but i don’t get that impression. I get that “a man is romantically interested in me, and i want to turn him down, but i can’t.”
and she really can’t. i mean, of course, she could, but hewlett’s romantic interest in her is INSANELY valuable. no sensible human would try reject him. think about it!
- her previous husband, selah, is a continenal soldier. if she rejects a british soldier for him, what’s she saying?
- SHE’S A FUCKING SPY. could rejecting hewlett lead to spite? as things are, he in no way suspects her. he’s said that himself.
- not only does hewlett protect her from suspicion from the british, but it also protects her from simcoe. which he’s done. repeatedly.
- also, deyoung! that’s his name, right? remember when she gives him the boot full of vomit and hewlett makes deyoung pour anna and helwett a drink?
also, i think anna’s way more interesting - and her conflict is so more real - if she doesn’t love hewlett. because i think you can still be so completely fucking torn about someone you love - and i think she does in canon loved abe, even if she doesn’t now - for someone that you only respect and admire.
if the circumstances were different and there weren’t so many external forces that demand anna stay on good terms with hewlett, i could be convinced of this ship. but as things are, there’s no way i buy it.
anyway, hewlett discourse. i’ll probably delete later.
