Greenhouse prompt/question: when Washington finds out about John/Alex affair before their marriage, will he feel insecure and try to prove that he is better lover and partner than this passionate, brilliant, handsome young man?
I think George would fret temporarily about being set aside for John, but I don’t think it would last very long.
1. Most importantly, if Alexander wanted John instead, he could just have him. George has made it pretty clear that, formalities aside, Alexander should feel zero obligation to stay with him romantically. George would be heart-achey, but also, what’s most important to him is Alexander’s happiness.
2. George and John are so different. Alexander wouldn’t be satisfied with George in the way that he certainly seems to be, if he wanted John.
3. It makes perfect sense to George that John is the kind of person Alexander would gravitate to him while he was under the “iron yoke” (lol) of the Schuylers. Here’s Alexander, who’s got all these adventure stories, and he’s suffering under all these rules and stuff, and naturally he gravitates to this reckless radical kid who’s dad won’t let him join the army.
4. I think Alexander would be MORE worried when he finally got up the courage to tell George. And George would be like ‘well, there must be a reason you’ve picked a sulking old man recluse like me over an up-and-coming military man. and i am WAY too old to look gift horses in mouth.”
And that would be the end of it.
