If Alexander is going by General Hamilton during the second war, when it over how does the "actually, we're married" conversation go with the people not in the know?

i don’t know if i could actually pull it off, but in my head it would look like this:

first of all, in greenhouses verse, it’s totally cool to take other lovers if you’re married if you’re at war (or probably away from your real significant other for any significant amount of time). so actually they would be saved from really explaining gen. hamilton’s general attentions to/with general washington, because general washington is away from lord schuyler, and look he’s under a lot of stress, so his attentions to the dashing general hamilton are perfectly reasonable. i mean, in his other wars, he did not prefer to take lovers, but maybe being married changed him.

this would probably include a very mysterious recluse husband. i don’t know how people would - idk? - pretend? that general hamilton does not acutally look like lord schuyler-washington. everyone in washington’s close circle would already know and understand the situation. i suppose anyone who had to be part of the situation might either be told “here’s the deal and keep your yap shut,” or just be like “ok, so general hamilton is gen. washington’s war-lover, that’s cool.” i mean, there wouldn’t be a lot of time for PDA and stuff, so there is that.

i can see that really awkward conversation though.

“general washington, i don’t mean to be forward, and of course i would never presume to your personal business, but would lord schuyler-washington –”

washington stopped. looked at wolcott, then at hamilton. there was a moment.

“major wolcott, please join us privately?” hamilton said.

they stood in the little room.

“I am lord schuyler-washington,” hamilton said. wolcott stared at him.

“i - beg – your – pardon..?”

“if it were to be well-known that my husband is one of my most outstanding generals, and the bravest, and brilliant, and [etc etc] – i would get all the credit,” washington said. “this also permits hamilton his anger, without disturbing my image.”
