Lafayette did not serve them breakfast. Washington made no notice of it, but it was unlike Lafayette to serve them breakfast three days in a row, if not becuase he had some report to make. Come to think of it, he had not seen Lafayette at all. He glanced at Washington, who was reading a letter and drinking coffee.

“Where is Lafayette?” he asked the man with the coffee.

“Ill, sir.”

“Why are you not tending to him?”

Washington’s eyes flicked up from his letter.

“Well,” Hamilton said, frowning, “Where is he? I shall see him. And send him a pot of tea. Certainly he cannot be left to suffer quietly in the dark.”
