Washington held his tongue as he listened to Jefferson speak in the council meeting. He disliked the man, even though he also felt at some point he had given the man an unfair assessment. Jefferson was evidently brilliant, well-read, and decently-spoken. He dressed himself well, and was altogether inoffensive.

It was because Hamilton disliked him with the intensity that only his husband could manage, he suspected. Hamilton could discuss for hours the many way Jefferson had been spawned by demons or something similarly vicious and creative. The speech was a long one and he should have listened more intently than he was; the day was hot, and he had given Hamilton specific instructions on his orchids and he had no idea if the man would listen, if only in attempt to improve.

He could imagine Hamilton’s discreet touch on his hip. There, you see? His husband would say. He does not all the way know his own position. If he really meant it, he would stick out his chest more.
