For a while Washington watched him softly argue with John Adams. It was not entirely a fair fight, Washington thought; Hamilton threw his whole viciousness at Adams, and riposted him at every turn. Adams did not, in all honesty, stand a chance. But he could hardly concede. So Washington drank his wine and watched out of the corner of his eye until Adams had been so rendered that all that remained was fat and rotted flesh. Adam sulked off; Hamilton turned to him, with firm, powerful strides, and then dumped himself inelegantly in Washington’s lap.
“Hello,” he said. There was a wine-brought redness to his cheeks, and his hands were warm with it. his eyes gleamed.
“You are drunk,” Washington said, but he wrapped his arms around Hamilton’s waist anyway. Hamilton let them stay.
“And what shall you do if I am?” Hamilton teases. He put his hands on Washington’s.
“Let you run amuck, I think.”
“You should catch me and teach me some discipline.”
Washington quirked an eyebrow. He heard a throat clearing behind him and deigned to look. Let men watch and be jealous.
“Maybe I shall,” he murmured.
