Would you be willing to provide any insight on Lafayette's perception of Alex early on in Greenhouses? Was Lafayette is protective overWashington? Did Alex's harshness anger him, or did Laf sympathize with him? Just curious!! (& desperately awaiting the eventual explanation of Lafayette's mysterious past in your lovely fic)
i don’t think all of these things are mutually exclusive. lafayette IS a) overprotective with watchington and b) sympathizes with alex (but not that much) and c) also thinks alex is an asshole.
however:
what lafayette most importantly thinks of early-greenhouses alex is: he presents a clear and present danger to washington. a much worse and different kind of danger than most of washington’s enemies, which are numerous. no one who hates washington has ever been permitted free reign of washington’s house. hamilton can be throwing as many hissyfits as he wants, until he proves to lafayette’s (very high) standards that he isn’t going to punish washington (whatever that means) for what washington’s done to him, lafayette is keeping an eye on on him. it’s worse becuase hamilton’s clearly brilliant. if hamilton wanted to destroy washington, lafayette thinks he could, and thus he better keep an eye on this little shit because it’s his job to make sure that doesn’t happen.
as you can imagine, hamilton doesn’t like this at all, and it’s worse becuase hamilton definitely realizes something is very weird about lafayette and he can’t find out what it is, and one one will tell him. he definitely thinks lafayette is washington’s spy, which is kind of right, only washington doesn’t really actually want to know what hamilton is doing all the time.
so they begin very far from friends. hamilton bans servants from his room, which is why it’s a disastrous mess. and for a while things are not good. but they improve.
