hamilton wakes when a beam of sunlight strikes him viciously in the face. uncalled for and unexpected. vengeful. the things he will write about it–

he is distracted from his rage by the arm across his side. usually washington awakes before him and is in the greenhouse, or at breakfast, or in his study. but he’s here now, calm, steadfast. his breath comes easy. some of his persistent worries - hardly all of them - have not yet settled in their homes in his crows-feet. he looks younger, hamilton thinks. he offers one more sullen glare at the sunbeam, but then he turns and buries his face in washington’s chest. perhaps still asleep due to their activities. he feels a twinge of soreness.

a hand wraps lazily around him, and washington groans.

“that blasted sun,” washington murmurs.
