CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP NOT SURE HOW TO STOP (WHY STOP)



His assistant wasn’t picking up the phone, which usually was a bad sign. He sighed and walked down the hallway, overriding the lock on the man’s office. He glanced subtly up and down the hallway, and then pressed his ear to the door. Nothing. He opened the door slowly, sliding inside and clicking it locked behind him.

His assistant had acquired a whiteboard on wheels from somewhere and was presently constructing a graph out of a bad physics movie, muttering to himself. Peculiarly, he was shirtless, his shirt, tie and jacket tossed over the back of his chair. Worse, the air conditioning in the office was roaring.

“You didn’t pick up your phone,” he said, sliding his hands in his pockets to protect them from the chill.

Hamilton didn’t seem to hear him in his daze, moving from thought-bubble to thought-bubble. Washington took a step back and tried to comprehend the graph. Some of the bubbles had obvious names: investments —> tax shelters –> ROTH –> isles provided Washington with some obvious good guesses about what he could be doing. But most of it was incomprehensible and almost illegible.

“Hamilton,” he said, firmer this time. Hamilton didn’t turn around.

Washington sighed and strode across the room and set the flat length of his palm against the junction of Hamilton’s neck and shoulder. Despite the climate control, the man’s skin was on fire.

He gave a squeeze, and Hamilton hissed in a breath through his teeth, his next thought bubble jagged and unfinished.

“Almost done with reworking our designated protected for tax-sheltered funds,” Hamilton said, almost too fast, “Then I’ve got the financial review, and then the mid-level development processes. I’m running, don’t stop me. I’m fine. Just working.”

Washington let his hand fall away and took in the icebox of the room. Hamilton cleaned up the thought bubble and scrawled protected trust in it.

“Pick up your phone when I call,” Washington said. For it, he received not even a grunt of acknowledgment.
